It’s estimated that 185,000 people in the US undergo arm or leg amputation each year, and 2 million people in the US are living with limb loss.1 Reasons for amputation include extremity tumor, trauma, and complications following trauma, as well as complications from diabetes of vascular disease.
Searching for information after receiving any diagnosis is common. Having a good understanding of a condition helps you to understand steps in diagnosis as well as the treatment options your healthcare provider describes. There is so much information available it can become confusing to sort through and understand.
This is why The Limb Preservation Foundation has made it a part of our mission to provide comprehensive, up-to-date information about extremity tumors, infection, and trauma.
It’s important to keep in mind not all amputations can or should be avoided. In fact, there are situations where amputation is the best option. Remember – saving a life is the priority of saving a limb and that good function is a key to a successful outcome.
When armed with accurate information, difficult decisions are a little less difficult.
