THE LIMB PRESERVATION FOUNDATION
Working to Save Limbs & Lives

The Limb Preservation Foundation is a charitable organization that was established in 1987. Our mission is to support the prevention and treatment of limb threatening conditions due to trauma, tumor or infection. Patient treatment programs, educational programs and research are all funded by The Limb Preservation Foundation with the goal of addressing the needs of individuals who are facing the potential loss of a limb. The following are services offered by the Foundation:
PATIENT ASSISTANCE
Created by medical professionals who shared the vision that all people with complex extremity problems should have access to the best medical care, regardless of their ability to pay, The Limb Preservation Foundation’s programs continue to serve those in need. Through the Foundation's Patient Assistance Program, funds are allocated to provide limb-sparing medical treatment to non- or under-insured individuals who otherwise may have gone untreated.
EDUCATION
The Foundation is committed to promoting the awareness and prevention of limb threatening conditions through educational programs.PUBLIC EDUCATION
Every year thousands of people incur limb threatening injuries due to the improper use and/or maintenance of power tools. The Limb Preservation Foundation has developed a Hand Safety Education packet that is distributed to all educators with the goal of decreasing hand injuries within the school envoiornment. Included in each packet is a Hand Safety newsletter, a Guide to Hand Safety, a First Aid Guide and the Foundation's wallet-sized hand emergency card outlining first aid treatment for hand injuries.PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
The staff and volunteers of The Limb Preservation Foundation are available as professional resources to the medical community and the general public in regard to limb preservation issues and information. As the Foundation grows, it will be hosting a variety of continuing education programs specific to limb preservation.RESEARCH
Foundation funding supported research that led to the development of osteosarcoma treatment protocols resulting in an increased survival rate of pediatric limb cancer patients from 60% in 1986 to 92% in 2002.Since 1987, The Limb Preservation Foundation has provided funding for clinical and laboratory research regarding limb preservation, including the treatment of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and non-healing fractures, chemotherapy, and disease transmission during bone and tissue transplants.
With the goal of continuing the discovery of life and limb saving treatments, The Limb Preservation Foundation provides research funding via:
The endowment of the Ross M. Wilkins Limb Preservation University Chair at the CSU Animal Cancer Center in Fort Collins. Once funded, this Chair will insure the continuation of extremity research in the State of Colorado.
The Limb Preservation Foundation annually funds a $50,000 investigative research grant to a scientific investigator via the Foundation’s Pilot Research Grants Program. The goal of this program is to provide seed funding for basic research projects which may lead to improved diagnostic and treatment protocols for bone cancers and other extremity diseases.
